Add some country charm to your kitchen for under £2 {Yes, really!}

Ticking is my absolute favourite fabric pattern. Its timeless, classic and oozes rustic, country charm.

French ticking stripe has been around for 1,000 years, but it never gets old. Originally a utility fabric, it was traditionally used for mattresses and pillow coverings. It commonly has a striped design, in muted colors such as brown, grey or blue, and occasionally red or yellow, against a plain, neutral background.

This kitchen is divine. The blend of old and new styles come together perfectly to create a subtly distinctive look. I adore the chicken wire cupboard door detail, the natural, pared-back colour scheme and of course, the use of ticking fabric! Can you imagine sipping a coffee whilst lounging on that window seat watching the world go by? Heaven! and that sage ticking rug? Gorgeous!

Jenny Wolf is one of my favourite interior designers and this project ‘Devonshire House’ is an exceptional example of a lot of style in a small amount of space. Have a look at Jenny’s other projects, it’s a great way to while away a rainy afternoon.

I was in Ikea last week and noticed these Signe rugs. They come in a range of colours and at £1.90 they’re incredibly good value, verging on ridiculous frankly! They’re machine washable and a decent size at 55 x 85 cm. Featuring a traditional ticking stripe design with fringed edging, they’re a super affordable way of introducing some county charm in your home.

Not that a £1.90 purchase needs justifying, but I had wanted a new rug to put under the sink, I currently have a small jute rug, but it’s more like a door mat size really so I was on the hunt for a larger one! Thanks Ikea 🙂

Having a tiled floor in the kitchen, your feet can get a little chilly washing up! With so many hard, flat often cold surfaces in kitchens, it’s nice to soften these finishes with fabrics and a rug adds texture and brings out a kitchen’s cosy side! I chose the grey stripe and it adds a cosy, country vibe.

I was so pleased with my new purchase, I bought one for the hallway too, and it fits perfectly, how about that!

I think Frank the sausage dog approves too…

So what do you think? Would you guess these rugs were from Ikea? Which colour would you go for? I’d love to hear your thoughts so why not leave a comment below.

  1. After reading this blog again, I know I neeeed to have one of these rugs in my living room!
    My living room goes out onto the back garden so during these wintery months, my laminate is taking a battering! Having seen the one in your hall next to the ‘chic shadow’ I must buy one!! Ikea here I come – something tells me I won’t come out with just a rug though!
